Saija encapsulates all that is perfect about the Finnish wilderness. Located on the shores of Lake Jokijarvi, this trip allows you to combine one of the areas most beloved activities, husky sledding, with some peaceful relaxation too. If you are looking for a bustling location with wild nightlife, this is not the place for you, but should you be in need of a tranquil retreat then look no further.

The Lodge is constructed entirely of wood and whilst on site your accommodation will be in lovely little log cabins, each with their own sauna. The cosy restaurant is a short walk away and offers traditional Finnish home-cooked specialities. Around the lodge there are also some fantastic cross-country ski and snowshoe trails which you can explore further on your free day here, making the most of the wilderness on offer.

During this trip you will be responsible for your own team of four to six dogs who will lead you through increasingly beautiful scenery in this north east corner of Finland. Within the area, huge arctic forests alternate with frozen swamps, lakes and rivers offering an ever changing terrain for you and your team to explore.

Driving your own team of huskies is an experience sure to be remembered for years to come. To be responsible for your own team of enthusiastic and dedicated dogs who were seemingly born to run is for many, a once in a lifetime experience and one that Saija caters to perfectly.

Our Opinion

"This trip is fantastic as it allows you to develop and hone skills in mushing through managing and leading your sled of willing and eager huskies through the wilderness…now how many people can say they have done that! A truly unforgettable and unbeatable experience in a location with magnificent beauty and blissful peace and silence; a welcome break to the usual hectic bustling of everyday life. "  Ali McLean

Your Opinion

"Thank you White Circle for one of the best experiences we have had. A 2-night stopover in Helsinki and an extra night at The Saija Lodge - all arranged without problem! Everyone at The Saija Lodge were amazing - we felt well looked after. The accommodation & surroundings are just picture perfect! We loved every minute, even at minus 31 degrees celsius! Our accomodaton both at The Lodge & The Wilderness cabin was much more luxurious than I had anticipated, a very welcome treat. Jano was our guide but they are all brilliant at what they do & really helpful and informative. All of the meals were included and were delicious - I am sure we all returned home a little fatter. We booked the Husky Safari which was truly amazing and definitely the best bit for me. There are about a 100 dogs there - all really well looked after, loved, happy to be there, and happy to work. It is amazing spending time with them and the sledging and overnight safari really were a once in a lifetime e" Prita Daliya - Mar 14

Saija Lodge

Saija Lodge offers a true sense of peace and quiet in the wilderness, with a remote location on the shores of Lake Jokijarvi that ensures an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Hotel facilities
The Lodge encapsulates traditional Finnish style and is constructed entirely from wood. The main building is just a short walk away from the cottages and houses a delightful restaurant serves dishes a variety of homemade Finnish and international cuisine throughout your stay.

On site there is a husky farm and 25km of managed cross-country ski trails which lead almost directly from the main building out into the surrounding wilderness.

Room types

Lodge accommodation
Saija consists of 19 suites which are situated within winter cottage style buildings. All suites have a living area with TV, shower and toilet room and a sauna. Bedrooms are typically located on a mezzanine level.

Wilderness Cabins
Whilst participating in the husky safari, one night will be spent at Harjajarvi wilderness cabin. The cabin is very remote and has no electricity or running water, but is sure to be very warm and cosy as soon as the fire is alight. There is also the obligatory Finnish sauna.

These small cabins epitomise what the wilderness is all about offering escapism from everyday life and getting to experience a pristine and unspoiled environment.

Whilst in the wilderness, the group will all look after their own team of dogs and help to prepare dinner for both huskies and humans. Meals will be cooked over an open fire and served in the cabin.

Day 1: Flights and arrivals
Upon landing at Oulu you will be greeted and transferred directly to your accommodation at Saija Lodge. After a chance to settle in, a welcome dinner will be served in the main building which as well as offering delicious homemade Finnish food, will also provide you with the chance to get to know your fellow guests who will be sharing your upcoming adventures.

Day 2: Introduction day
Today you will be given a detailed introduction from your guide who will give you all the details about your upcoming adventure. You will also be provided with the cold weather clothing that will be yours for the duration of your stay and your guide will give you a tour of the facilities.

Day 3: Husky training run
Following breakfast there will be an introductory meeting with your guide who will discuss your forthcoming husky safari, outlining safety aspects and advice on how to best guide your dogs. You will then meet with your eager team of huskies.

Each participant will have a team of four to six huskies and will be responsible for the dogs’ care throughout the safari. You will have the opportunity to practice with them and begin to build up a relationship on a 13km training run through the wilderness landscape which surrounds the lodge.

You would be hard pushed to explain the contrast of emotions you feel as you encourage your dog team on this first safari. There is the rush of adrenalin and excitement as you head away from the husky farm and into the wilds. Yet on the other hand there is an intense silence that can lead to a very tranquil experience.

Day 4: Full day husky safari
After yesterday’s training run, today increases the pace as you head out on a full day safari. You will drive your team through snow-laden forests and across frozen lakes and rivers. Lunch will be served en-route around an open fire and by your return to the lodge you will have covered 25 to 35km.

Days 5 and 6: Overnight husky safari
Today you will take full responsibility for your dedicated dog team on an overnight trip. You will travel through beautiful winter scenery, once more enjoying the gentle swish of the sled’s runners and the gentle padding of the huskies’ paws on the snow. Your dogs will be eager to lead you across this stunningly dramatic landscape, but be sure to provide some momentum by pushing off with your feet on the inclines – your dogs will be very grateful!

Upon arriving at your overnight base, you will be in charge of caring for your team and the dogs will need to be fed, watered and settled in for the night before you head into the cabin. Your team will also work together in preparing dinner and collecting firewood and water for your overnight stay. The hard work is rewarded with a delicious dinner cooked over an open fire and a sauna to relax in. The cabin is remarkably cosy once the fire is blazing and the peaceful silence of the wilderness ensures you should get an excellent night’s sleep.

The following morning you are sure to be awoken by the eager barks of your dog team and after breakfast, you adventure will continue back to the lodge. Once again, you will have lunch around an open fire and upon return to the Lodge a shower and a hot dinner will be a welcome treat after your time in the wilds.

Day 7: Free day
Today you may want to relax after your time out with your huskies and enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of your surroundings. Alternatively you may want to take advantage of the cross-country ski and snowshoe trails which surround the hotel, allowing you to explore the landscape at your own pace. There are also additional guided activities such as snowmobiling which can be booked locally.

Day 8: Departure
Today you will bid farewell to Saija as you head to the airport for your return flights home.
