Those who have tried an overnight dog sled trip in the past and experienced the pure, unadulterated joy that comes from driving your own team of huskies across a beautiful arctic landscape are always keen to try more of the same.

The sense of freedom and adventure can be addictive and Harriniva have designed this seven day tour into the wilds of Northern Finland to satisfy those who have had some previous experience, but wish to push their adventurous spirit further.

On this tour, which will cover around 300km, you will cross stunning forest and lake landscapes as your route takes you to the edge of Pallas-Ylläs National Park. There is also a day of mushing in the treeless mountain area around Galdotieva Sámi land, a place where only the reindeer herders make their home.

Throughout you will learn to cooperate and bond with your team of willing huskies as they take you deep into the arctic wilds and encounter some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe on these long spring days of Lapland. This is an amazing journey that is sure to stay with you for a lifetime with memories of endless snow-covered fells and an eager dog team leading the way.

Our Opinion

"Every year without fail, Harriniva is our best selling winter destination and every year it earns rave reviews from countless clients. For me, the attraction lies in being safely cocooned in a warm, cosy and very friendly environment whilst being surrounded by Lapland's vast winter wilderness. Combine this homely setting with the thrill of venturing into the wild with Harriniva's expert guides and you really can say that you've experienced the best of both worlds." Ali McLean

Harriniva Wilderness Hotel

Next to the remote town of Muonio, deep in the heart of North West Lapland, Harriniva encapsulates the ideal Finnish wilderness location.

Harriniva is a pioneer for winter activity holidays and there are few places with greater knowledge and understanding of the vast, snow-laden, arctic playground that a Finnish winter offers.

With almost 30 years’ experience behind them, their range of activities on offer is second to none with a fantastic variety to choose from including huskies, snowmobiles, Northern Light searches, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and much more.

The hotel is an annual favourite with our guests and its combination of a warm welcome, unforgettable experiences and delightful Scandinavian-style accommodation is sure to be inviting to all.

Hotel Facilities
The hotel offers separate sauna facilities for men and women which are free of charge in the evenings for around three hours. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and, in addition, two PCs are available in the reception area for guest use.

The restaurant has three dining areas and serves simple and hearty food - ideal sustenance for outdoor activities and Aurora watching. Breakfast is a Scandinavian-style buffet offering a wide selection of options and your evening meal is generally a salad buffet followed by a set main meal and dessert.

There is also a pub on site which is a great place to gather with fellow guests to discuss your Lappish adventures.

Harriniva operates an ‘Aurora Alarm’ which is included in some itineraries or can be arranged in advance.

There is the Aurora Wellness Centre situated on the river bank offering a variety of therapies and treatments. At busy times these should be booked in advance.

In the reception building there is a small souvenir shop where you can buy postcards and pick up some locally crafted goods.

Harriniva accepts all major credit cards and you can also exchange currency at reception. There are no cashpoints available on site.

Room types
The hotel has 64 en-suite double/twin hotel rooms with a shower and hairdryer. Socialising in the evenings is encouraged, so there are no televisions in the rooms but a TV room is available in the hotel. Tea and coffee can be purchased from reception.

Wilderness Cabins
Any trip which incorporates an overnight safari will include at least one night in a wilderness cabin. There can be few better ways to escape the reality of everyday life than a night in the wilds.

The remote location of the cabins ensures there is little or no light pollution, creating the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Some of the cabins are basic (no electricity or running water) but all are comfortable and cosy once the fire is going. Everyone pitches in to help collect water and firewood, which adds to the experience of the great outdoors!

Your guide will prepare your meals over an open fire (if you have any dietary requirements please let us know at the time of booking). Despite the wilderness locations, the meals that the guides produce always get wonderful feedback from our clients every year.

The wilderness cabins do not have shower or bathroom facilities but with it being Finland there is always a sauna on hand to steam clean in. Toilets are generally compostable and are situated a short walk from the cabin. We would suggest a head torch as a handy piece of equipment to take for any nocturnal visits!

Sleeping arrangements are in dormitory style areas where you will sleep in arctic grade sleeping bags and, should you feel the cold, possibly your thermals. The cabins tend to get toasty warm once the fire has been blazing for a while.

Whilst on overnight safaris, your luggage will be securely stored at the hotel and valuables can be left in the hotel safe.

Safari Houses and Cabins
On our multi-day husky and snowmobile safaris you will spend some nights in shared safari houses or cabins at the beginning and end of your trip. Harriniva has a variety that they use, some of which are on site and others which are situated 3km from Harriniva. Guests will be transferred to the hotel for all meals if they are staying off site.

Each safari house or cabin has its own shower, toilet and sauna.

Day 1: Flights, transfers and introduction
Upon arrival into Kittila you will be greeted and transferred to your cabin accommodation at Harriniva. These are situated close to both the Harriniva Wilderness Hotel and the sled dog centre and the shared accommodation ensures that you will get the opportunity to bond with your fellow trail companions before your journey begins. Your welcome dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant.

Day 2: Training and departure on the trail
After enjoying a hearty breakfast to set you up for the days ahead, you will meet with your experienced guide who will give a briefing about your journey over the next few days. You will then proceed to the sled dog centre at Harriniva where you will receive a short training session and pack your sled. The dogs' enthusiastic anticipation is bound to pass on to you and you will no doubt be filled with excitement as you head off into some of the wildest terrain in Finland.

Days 2 – 7: On the trail
From Harriniva your journey will take you initially to Palojärvi, the final village in Finland before the Norwegian border.

Daily travelling distances will vary between 30 and 60km depending on the weather and trail conditions and routes will vary as conditions change.

On the trail you will generally spend four nights in wilderness cabins. The style of accommodation is basic but welcoming. Usually there is no running water or electricity but there is always a sauna to steam-clean in and once the fire is going and the guide has prepared a hearty evening meal these become wonderful places to spend the night. The sleeping areas tend to be dormitory style and toilets are in a separate building. Whilst staying here, all will pitch in with collecting water and firewood and you are sure to develop a real sense of camaraderie.

Whilst on the trial you will be responsible for your own team of huskies and their care is your priority. The effort that you put into looking after them will really encourage the strong bond between human and husky and as the days go by you will really begin to work as one team.

Two of the nights on your trip will be at the Galdotieva Fell centre which offers relative luxury in comparison to the shared cabin as they have indoor toilets and showers for guests.

An advantage of travelling at this time of year is that days are longer and much milder than in the depths of winter allowing you the opportunity to take in the stunning scenery to its fullest. There are few experiences that can compare to a day on the trail with the sun beaming down on the pristine white landscape and the soft sound of paws on snow.

Day 8: Return to Harriniva
This afternoon you will return to Harriniva, and although you are sure to feel sadness at saying goodbye to your dog team, the warm lights of the hotel will be a welcome sight.

A delicious dinner with Lappish specialities will be served for you this evening as you bid farewell to Finland. This is the perfect opportunity to gather as a group for one last time and reminisce over the fantastic journey you shared.

Day 9: Departure
Today it is time to say goodbye to Lapland as you are returned to the airport for your flights home.
