The importance and excitement of the New Year can sometimes be a little anticlimactic. However with your first day of the year spent in the vast wintery landscape of North West Finland, this trip is sure to make the end of the year a genuinely special and unique experience that will be remembered for many years to come.

At this time of year, Hotel Kittila is designated as adult only with no children under 12 years of age staying. This ensures that the activities and festivities maintain an adult focus and you can celebrate with like-minded individuals in a wonderful location.

The small Lappish town of Kittila is a friendly and welcoming location for visitors and offers the chance to sample authentic Finnish wilderness. During your stay here you will have the opportunity to make the most of this scenic landscape, enjoying exciting activities in the company of experienced guides.

This trip is always one of our most popular New Year experiences, receiving excellent reviews from clients each season, who praise the interesting activities and the welcoming atmosphere. Kittila is also located ideally within the Aurora Zone, ensuring excellent potential to see the Northern Lights.

By the end of your stay you will have really started the New Year in style and enjoyed snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, husky safaris and so much more.

Our Opinion

"It is probably highly unlikely that you have spent a New Year’s Day snowmobiling across a pristine, snow-laden landscape, so if this takes your fancy, then do not delay in booking this trip! I love Kittila for its genuine Lappish feel, helpful and knowledgeable guides and great agenda of activities and wouldn’t hesitate in suggesting it as great location to travel to this winter. We all know that New Years can be a bit of an anti-climax, and this is the perfect antidote." Ali McLean

Your Opinion

"Overall the holiday was excellent with mixed groups from South Africa, England, Zurich, Germany and Australia. The activities were well planned and the tour guides were very knowledgeable. When we arrived it was -32 degrees and the guides gave us tips to remain warm in the cold and how to prepare. The large overall suits were a little bulky and I used snow pants and jackets for most of the activities but the equipment was very good and maintained. The hotel Kittilä was clean and tidy with pleasant staff and the food was good overall. The main highlights of the holiday of course included the outdoor activities of husky safari, snowmobiles, reindeer, cross-country skiing and snowshoe walking. Seeing the Northern Lights was fabulous, but you need a tripod to take excellent pictures, the exposure time on the cameras needs to be at least 5-8 seconds otherwise the pictures are fuzzy. The magical colours though of the morning, through the day and at dusk were great and seeing how peopl" Steven Bosworth - Jan 15

Lainio Snow Village

Lainio Snow Village, located 200km above the Arctic Circle, is a marvel of snow and ice construction in the west of Finnish Lapland. Rebuilt annually, the hotel has a differing theme each season and showcases the incredible talent of local designers and architects through a marvellous village which covers 20,000 square metres.

A night at the Snow Village in one of their cold rooms is a delightful addition to your trip and an alternative to your final night at the hotel after which you will be transferred to the airport for your flights home.

Please be aware that your flights will most likely be departing in the late afternoon so you will have a free morning at Lainio. During this this time you can relax and make use of the hotel’s sauna, or perhaps hire snowshoes or cross country skis and explore the neighbouring region (all bookable and payable locally).

Hotel facilities
The Snow Village consists of 30 snow rooms and suites, in addition to a restaurant, bar, chapel and outdoor sculptures and slides which have all been beautifully designed and crafted from snow and ice.

Alongside the ice restaurant there is also a warm restaurant and you can choose to dine at either (subject to availability). The meals that are served here are hearty and wholesome and guests can sample some Finnish specialities such as reindeer and Arctic Char for dinner and enjoy a plentiful buffet for breakfast.

Beside the Snow Village there is a warm area where you will find the sauna, shower and toilet facilities, lounge area and a small selection of warm bedrooms should you find yourself unable to sleep in your cold room in the middle of the night.

Following your night in the cold room you will be awoken by a glass of warm berry juice.

Room types
Standard snow rooms
Each snow room has been crafted from snow and ice and contains a carved bed and bedside table. The beds are topped with a mattress and reindeer skins to keep in the warmth and you will sleep in high quality fleece lined sleeping bags. Before bed you will be given advice on how best to stay warm and what to wear for your overnight experience in the cold room.

Ice suites
The ice suites are similar to the snow rooms but are slightly larger in size and all reflect unique design in their art and lighting.

27 December: Flights, arrival and introduction
After you have landed at the airport you will take the short transfer to Hotel Kittila where a welcome dinner will await. This will be your first chance to sample some of the delicious Finnish food on offer as well as meeting your fellow guests who will be sharing your upcoming adventures.

28 December: Snowshoeing and cross country skiing
This morning there will be an introductory meeting from your guide who will discuss the upcoming activities you will be enjoying and provide you with your cold weather clothing.

Following this introduction you will then strap on snowshoes and set out for your first walk in the snow topped surroundings of the hotel. Your safari will be for around two hours following which you will enjoy lunch back at the hotel.

This afternoon you will explore the scenery once more – this time via cross country skis. Skiing in this style is a much beloved Finnish pastime and something that most of our guests wish to try. You will receive instructions from your guide before setting off to navigate the snow. Should you find this to be an enjoyable activity you are free to hire cross country skis at any point during your stay.

29 December: Reindeer and huskies
After breakfast this morning you will be heading out to get to know to two of the region’s most famed animals as you enjoys a reindeer safari and try your hand at husky sledding!

First up, you will be transferred to the nearby reindeer farm at Torassieppi where you will be introduced to the important practice of reindeer husbandry as you meet the herder and visit the small museum which is on site. Reindeers are of the utmost importance to the region and have a great cultural, historical and social significance to the Sami people of Lapland. You will of course get to meet the animals and also enjoy a 3 km ride through the forest (1-2 people per sled).

After lunch around the fire in a traditional Kota you will make your way to a nearby husk farm where you will meet the excitable dogs and get to know the mushers. Then you will have the chance to see what a husky safari is really like as your team of dogs lead you across the snow on a 9km safari. Afterwards you will return to Hotel Kittila for a relaxing sauna before dinner.

30 December: Levi free day
Following breakfast this morning you will be taken to the nearby ski town of Levi with the day free for you to set your own agenda. There are several excellent ski slopes at the Levi Fell which you can purchase a pass for or you could enjoy a relaxing day in the local spa. Levi has much to offer visitors and you may simply want to stroll through the town and enjoy its small selection of shops and restaurants.

You will be transferred back to the hotel in the late afternoon.

New Year’s Eve: Snowmobiles, ice fishing and Torassieppi Winter Village
We are sure that today will be a New Year’s Eve that you will remember for a long time to come!

Your first adventurous excursion is a snowmobile safari – a much enjoyed and popular activity in this region! You will receive a safety briefing and lesson before setting out into the wilderness travelling two people per snowmobile. Kittila is surrounded by excellent snowmobile routes that will take you into the snow topped wilderness through forests and across frozen lakes.

The destination you will be aiming for today is a frozen lake which has excellent potential for ice fishing. This a traditional Finnish pastime that is still important today – not only for catching fish but also for enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Your guide will advise you on how to drill through the thick layer of ice to reach the water below then it is simply a case of dropping a line down and waiting for the fish to bite. You may not be successful in catching the fish but the fun is in the anticipation!

Your guide will prepare lunch over an open fire for you en route before you head back to the hotel. You will have covered around 30km and had the chance to appreciate this exciting and efficient way to navigate the landscape.

This evening you will be taken to the nearby Torassieppi Winter Village which is a wonderful construction of ice and snow that is built annually and features snow rooms, a toboggan run and an ice chapel. Here you will enjoy a tour of the village before enjoying an exciting New Year’s buffet and disco in the ice bar, with celebratory drinks and fireworks.

After you have been taken back to Hotel Kittila the celebrations will no doubt continue in the hotel’s own Pilot’s Pub.

New Year’s Day: Free Day
After last night’s festivities you will have a free day to relax and enjoy at your leisure. You may not want to venture far from the hotel and make use of the sauna, or alternatively you can explore the town of Kittila.

02 January: Free Day
