Our Opinion

"One of the things that I love about the Winter Adventure is the overnight dog sled safari. This is a true adventure and something you will remember forever. You don’t need to be Rannulph Fiennes in order to enjoy it as you'll be accompanied throughout by an experienced guide. I think a night in a wilderness cabin is something that everyone should try. It's the ultimate escape from everyday life and afterwards you'll be back to Harriniva where the welcome couldn't be warmer."  Jo Doran

Your Opinion

"I had the most amazing time and ticked off all the experiences I went there looking for - it was a real trip of a lifetime! I'd like to thank all at The White Circle for making the booking procedure so straight forward, personal and friendly, and all at Harriniva for making me so welcome." Heather Noble - Jan 11

Harriniva Wilderness Hotel

Next to the remote town of Muonio, deep in the heart of North West Lapland, Harriniva encapsulates the ideal Finnish wilderness location.

Harriniva is a pioneer for winter activity holidays and there are few places with greater knowledge and understanding of the vast, snow-laden, arctic playground that a Finnish winter offers.

With almost 30 years’ experience behind them, their range of activities on offer is second to none with a fantastic variety to choose from including huskies, snowmobiles, Northern Light searches, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and much more.

The hotel is an annual favourite with our guests and its combination of a warm welcome, unforgettable experiences and delightful Scandinavian-style accommodation is sure to be inviting to all.

Hotel Facilities
The hotel offers separate sauna facilities for men and women which are free of charge in the evenings for around three hours. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and, in addition, two PCs are available in the reception area for guest use.

The restaurant has three dining areas and serves simple and hearty food - ideal sustenance for outdoor activities and Aurora watching. Breakfast is a Scandinavian-style buffet offering a wide selection of options and your evening meal is generally a salad buffet followed by a set main meal and dessert.

There is also a pub on site which is a great place to gather with fellow guests to discuss your Lappish adventures.

Harriniva operates an ‘Aurora Alarm’ which is included in some itineraries or can be arranged in advance.

There is the Aurora Wellness Centre situated on the river bank offering a variety of therapies and treatments. At busy times these should be booked in advance.

In the reception building there is a small souvenir shop where you can buy postcards and pick up some locally crafted goods.

Harriniva accepts all major credit cards and you can also exchange currency at reception. There are no cashpoints available on site.

Room types
The hotel has 64 en-suite double/twin hotel rooms with a shower and hairdryer. Socialising in the evenings is encouraged, so there are no televisions in the rooms but a TV room is available in the hotel. Tea and coffee can be purchased from reception.

Wilderness Cabins
Any trip which incorporates an overnight safari will include at least one night in a wilderness cabin. There can be few better ways to escape the reality of everyday life than a night in the wilds.

The remote location of the cabins ensures there is little or no light pollution, creating the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Some of the cabins are basic (no electricity or running water) but all are comfortable and cosy once the fire is going. Everyone pitches in to help collect water and firewood, which adds to the experience of the great outdoors!

Your guide will prepare your meals over an open fire (if you have any dietary requirements please let us know at the time of booking). Despite the wilderness locations, the meals that the guides produce always get wonderful feedback from our clients every year.

The wilderness cabins do not have shower or bathroom facilities but with it being Finland there is always a sauna on hand to steam clean in. Toilets are generally compostable and are situated a short walk from the cabin. We would suggest a head torch as a handy piece of equipment to take for any nocturnal visits!

Sleeping arrangements are in dormitory style areas where you will sleep in arctic grade sleeping bags and, should you feel the cold, possibly your thermals. The cabins tend to get toasty warm once the fire has been blazing for a while.

Whilst on overnight safaris, your luggage will be securely stored at the hotel and valuables can be left in the hotel safe.

Safari Houses and Cabins
On our multi-day husky and snowmobile safaris you will spend some nights in shared safari houses or cabins at the beginning and end of your trip. Harriniva has a variety that they use, some of which are on site and others which are situated 3km from Harriniva. Guests will be transferred to the hotel for all meals if they are staying off site.

Each safari house or cabin has its own shower, toilet and sauna.

Day 1: Flights, arrival and introduction
Upon arrival at the airport you will be welcomed and transferred directly to your hotel situated in the heart of Finnish Lapland. Your journey will take you through the increasingly picturesque wilderness scenery and takes around one hour. After a chance to settle into your room, you will enjoy a welcome dinner in the restaurant after which there will be an introductory meeting with your guide to discuss your upcoming adventures. You will also be provided with your cold weather clothing that will be yours for the duration of your stay (if you are on a late arrival this will be the following morning).

Day 2: Reindeer farm and safari
Today offers a reasonably gentle start to your trip and the ideal introduction to your new surroundings. You will be driven to Torassieppi Reindeer Farm (around 20 minutes away) where you will gain an insight into the daily working lives of the herders and the important role that reindeers play in this corner of the world. At over 100 years old, the farm will showcase the traditions and customs of reindeer husbandry.

You will get the opportunity to learn how to throw a Lappish Lasso and to test your reindeer skills on a 7km reindeer safari through the wilderness (one to two people per sled). Lunch will be served around an open fire.

This afternoon you will head back to the hotel where you can take advantage of the traditional Finnish sauna or maybe hire some cross-country skis to enjoy one of the trails around the hotel.

Day 3: Snowmobile safari
Snowmobiles are essential in this part of the world as a form of transport to remote areas, but they are also exceptionally good fun for visitors to the area! After full instruction and a safety briefing your guide will lead you on a thrilling safari. The adventure will last around five hours (including lunch around an open fire) and cover 60-80km of the pristine white landscape. As you speed through snow-covered forests and across frozen lakes, you will get a real sense of the full scale of the arctic wilds. You will travel two people per snowmobile with the chance to take it turns to drive (providing you both have a full licence).

Day 4 and 5: Overnight husky safari and night in the wilderness
There are few experiences in life which can compare to driving a team of eager huskies through the wilds of the Arctic. The connection between the dogs, the musher and nature is one that is both unique and truly memorable.

After breakfast this morning you will pack your equipment for your two day tour and head out to meet the huskies. The Harriniva Arctic Sled Dog Centre has over 400 huskies and upon arrival here you will be given full instruction and tuition on how to handle them. The dogs have an enthusiastic anticipation for the trail and will be eager to run. Their excitement is bound to pass to you and as you harness your team of four to five dogs you will get the feeling that this is the start of a very memorable day indeed.

You will each get your own sled and will cover around 25km on each day. Your overnight accommodation will be in a wilderness cabin where you can fine tune your wilderness skills, making the fire, preparing food, feeding the huskies and heating the lakeside sauna. Overnight in the cabin is in shared facilities.

This remote wilderness location offers up the ideal opportunity for a chance to view the Northern Lights. Being so far away from any form of light pollution, your odds are exceptionally high so do keep an eye on the night sky before you snuggle up in your arctic sleeping bag.

The second day on the trail will give you the chance to further hone your mushing skills as you head back to the welcoming warmth of the hotel.

Day 6: Free day or optional activities
Today is left free for you to relax and enjoy the peacefulness of your surroundings. You may wish to hire snowshoes or cross-country skis and wander independently through the wilderness (payable locally) or you can take advantage of one of the saunas or sit and relax with a good book.

Alternatively you may want to try out some additional activities that the hotel can offer you of which there is an extensive variety including snowmobiles and huskies. These can be booked in advance through us or can be booked and paid for locally (subject to availability).

Tonight there will be a farewell dinner during which you will no doubt enjoy the opportunity to relive the exciting week with your fellow guests.

Day 7: Departure
Today your adventure draws to an end and you will be returned to the airport for your flights home
