Hotel Kittila is completely child free for the two departure dates for this trip, so they will be providing all the experiences you would want from a trip at Christmas time, but for grown-ups only!

With its strong sense of Lappish tradition and authenticity, Kittila represents true arctic wilderness and this trip gives you the chance to immerse yourself in the vast winter landscape and enjoy a variety of Finnish experiences this December.

At the end of your stay you will be travelling home with a wealth of unique and memorable experiences behind you. Our Opinion

""There can be fewer perfect locations for the festive period than Lapland and this trip with its reindeers, huskies, snow hotel and cross country skiing is sure to fill you with a childlike sense of excitement about Christmas. Kittila is a quintessential Finnish town, and the hotel, with its charming log cabin feel and enthusiastic local guides is the perfect base for such a festive adventure!” Dawn Rawlings

The Hotel Kittila

Hotel Kittila is just ten minutes from the airport so you will not have to wait long for your adventure here to begin. Despite this relatively short distance, Kittila is still very much in the wilderness and within minutes of the hotel you can find yourself in the true wilds of Finnish Lapland. The small town is ideally situated within the Aurora Zone and just a short walk from the hotel you will find some fantastic Northern Lights vantage points.

The hotel is owned and run by the Pietikäinen family, who also run the sister hotels of Harriniva, Jeris and Torassieppi. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff here and they aim to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Every year, we receive outstanding reviews for this holiday from people who have returned home feeling as if they are part of a very special Kittila family.

Hotel facilities
The hotel restaurant offers a good range of Lappish and international dishes with a varied salad buffet on offer prior to your main course. You can try local cuisine including reindeer and salmon dishes; excellent for keeping you well insulated against the Arctic conditions outside. There is also an extensive breakfast buffet every morning so you can fuel up for your activities. After dinner, guests can visit Pilot’s Pub which is also a popular spot with the locals in the evenings.

The town itself offers a small range of souvenir shops and supermarkets as well as access to cash points and exchange facilities. The hotel accepts all major credit cards.

The hotel has two saunas for guests to use in the evening and these are the ideal place to relax before dinner.

Room types

Double/twin rooms
This is a small establishment with just 37 rooms. All the bedrooms are comfortably furnished and have an en suite shower room with hair dryer. All rooms have access to Wi-Fi internet (a PC is also available in reception for guests to use) and televisions.

20th December: Flights, arrival and introduction
Upon arrival you will be transferred directly to your accommodation at Hotel Kittila where there will be a welcome dinner. Here you will be able to get to know your fellow travellers before getting a good night’s sleep ahead of your festive adventure.

21st December: Snowshoes and cross country skiing
This morning there will be an introductory meeting with your guide who will outline the upcoming activities and provide you with your cold weather clothing.

You will then strap on your snowshoes and head out in the wilderness to explore the beauty of the local area. Snowshoes allow you to travel further in deep snow and you will be sure to build up quite an appetite. So, after your exploration, you’ll head back to the hotel for a delicious lunch and prepare yourself for this afternoon’s cross country ski lesson.

After some instruction from your guide you will be setting off on the trails, through the forest, for a two to three hour trip. Cross country skiing can be very addictive and is a fantastic way to navigate across the snow-covered landscape. Should you wish to explore independently later in your stay then cross country skis are available to hire throughout your stay.

22nd December: Snowmobiles and ice fishing
After a delicious breakfast, the excitement begins as you head out on a snowmobile safari. After a safety briefing, you will set off (two per snowmobile) across snow covered fells and through the forests on a thrilling 30km safari. As you take it in turns to drive you will each get to experience driving the snowmobile (as long as you both have driving licences).

During your snowmobile adventure you will be taken to a nearby frozen lake so you can also try your hand at ice fishing – a traditional and much enjoyed activity in this corner of the world. The guides will show how to drill through the ice, before you lower your rod and wait for the fish to bite.

Lunch will then be served in the wilderness (hopefully you can make use of any of the fish you caught!).

23rd December: Torassieppi Reindeer Farm and Winter Village, husky safari
This morning will be spent at Torassieppi Reindeer Farm which is one of the oldest farms in Lapland. Reindeer and the Sami culture are inherently bound together and are integral to this region. Today you will be able to chat with the herders, learn more about their livelihood and the importance of reindeer as a source of food, transport and income.

You will get the opportunity to try out your lasso skills before enjoying a 3km reindeer-pulled sleigh ride safari through the forest (1-2 people per sled).

After your time with the reindeer you will be visiting the Torassieppi Winter Village which is created each season. Here you will get the opportunity to tour the snow rooms with their fantastic ice sculptures and enjoy lunch in the ice restaurant.

In the afternoon the adventures continue as you will try out dog sledding! After a short walk to the nearby husky farm will be introduced to the dogs and will learn more about how to handle the sled before you head out on a 9km safari. You will have your own team (two people per sled) of four or five huskies who will enthusiastically lead you across the expansive snow-scape.

24th December: Day in Levi
Once you have enjoyed a filling breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant you will be transported to Levi which roughly a 20 minute drive away. You are free the spend the day here as you wish, you could try downhill skiing, visit a local spa or look around the local shops before heading to one of the restaurants to meet the rest of your group for lunch. You will later be transferred back to your hotel.

Christmas in Finland is primarily celebrated on 24th December, so tonight there will be a special festive dinner and further celebrations where you can wish merry Christmas to your fellow guests and reflect on your experiences whilst enjoying some delicious food and drink.

25th December: Christmas Day and Snow Village
Today you are free to relax and enjoy your surroundings. There is also the option to add additional activities or perhaps hire some cross country skis or snowshoes.

Tonight you will head to the Snow Village for a special Christmas dinner buffet. After a delicious dinner you can take advantage of the disco with its very own ice bar and then watch the fireworks which mark a memorable Christmas Day.

26th December: Free day
Today is left free for you to enjoy your final day in Lapland however you choose. You could relax in the hotel’s sauna or you could curl up with a good book in front of the fire. Additional activities will also be available to arrange locally.

27th December: Departure
Today you will bid farewell to this remarkable location as you are transferred to the airport for your flights home.
