For many people this trip offers the perfect dream of Finnish wilderness and an experience that will stay with them for a lifetime. Five days of arctic landscape, driving your own team of huskies, remote wilderness cabins far from civilisation and a true sense of adventure await you on this trip.

Harriniva Wilderness Hotel has a renowned and respected Arctic Sled Dog Centre with over 400 eager huskies looked after by an expert team of mushers. This particular husky experience is an annual favourite with our guests and places are limited so we would recommend booking early to secure your place.

On this trip you will spend five days on the trail with your very own team of dogs, staying in wilderness accommodation throughout. The Pallas-Ylläs Park in North West Lapland is said to have the cleanest air in Europe. This husky adventure will lead you through the forests and frozen lakes at the edge of the national park, offering a unique opportunity to explore the untouched landscape of the Arctic.

Each participant will have their own dog team of four to six dogs with daily distances covering 25 to 40 kilometres depending on the group’s ability and the weather conditions.

Overall this is a wonderful adventure, which in addition to allowing you to bond with the dog team, offers wilderness skills, team spirit and the chance to enjoy the arctic landscape in a way that most people can only imagine.

Suitable for

Our Opinion

"You do not need previous experience for this holiday but you do need a sense of adventure. This is a hands on holiday. After a long day on the trail you will care for your own dogs and help around the camp, but I can assure you that the experience is all the more memorable because of this. If you are lucky enough to have tried dog sledding before and simply need more - this holiday will not disappoint." Barry Nolan

Your Opinion

"Just returned from a 5 day Husky Safari in Finland. We had a truly magical time. The pre trip support was excellent and accurate. The highlight of our trip was sledding with the Huskies, I wanted to take one of my dogs, Yeti, home with me but our guide Raikka would not agree! Living in the wilderness was very basic but brilliant. The food was wholesome, with plenty of it. The daytime cooking over an open fire was particularly special. The wilderness cabins were as described and the saunas kept us cleaner than we'd thought. Our guide Raikka was hardworking and helpful, but expect to work hard yourself which added a genuine sense of living in the wilderness and made the relaxing in the evenings all the more enjoyable. We didn't see the Northern Lights so we will have to return. I would recommend a day’s skiing at the local resort Olos, where everything was easy and the slopes were clear and well pisted. Thanks for a great trip!" Adrian James - Apr 12

Harriniva Wilderness Hotel

Next to the remote town of Muonio, deep in the heart of North West Lapland, Harriniva encapsulates the ideal Finnish wilderness location.

Harriniva is a pioneer for winter activity holidays and there are few places with greater knowledge and understanding of the vast, snow-laden, arctic playground that a Finnish winter offers.

With almost 30 years’ experience behind them, their range of activities on offer is second to none with a fantastic variety to choose from including huskies, snowmobiles, Northern Light searches, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and much more.

The hotel is an annual favourite with our guests and its combination of a warm welcome, unforgettable experiences and delightful Scandinavian-style accommodation is sure to be inviting to all.

Hotel Facilities
The hotel offers separate sauna facilities for men and women which are free of charge in the evenings for around three hours. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and, in addition, two PCs are available in the reception area for guest use.

The restaurant has three dining areas and serves simple and hearty food - ideal sustenance for outdoor activities and Aurora watching. Breakfast is a Scandinavian-style buffet offering a wide selection of options and your evening meal is generally a salad buffet followed by a set main meal and dessert.

There is also a pub on site which is a great place to gather with fellow guests to discuss your Lappish adventures.

Harriniva operates an ‘Aurora Alarm’ which is included in some itineraries or can be arranged in advance.

There is the Aurora Wellness Centre situated on the river bank offering a variety of therapies and treatments. At busy times these should be booked in advance.

In the reception building there is a small souvenir shop where you can buy postcards and pick up some locally crafted goods.

Harriniva accepts all major credit cards and you can also exchange currency at reception. There are no cashpoints available on site.

Room types
The hotel has 64 en-suite double/twin hotel rooms with a shower and hairdryer. Socialising in the evenings is encouraged, so there are no televisions in the rooms but a TV room is available in the hotel. Tea and coffee can be purchased from reception.

Wilderness Cabins
Any trip which incorporates an overnight safari will include at least one night in a wilderness cabin. There can be few better ways to escape the reality of everyday life than a night in the wilds.

The remote location of the cabins ensures there is little or no light pollution, creating the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Some of the cabins are basic (no electricity or running water) but all are comfortable and cosy once the fire is going. Everyone pitches in to help collect water and firewood, which adds to the experience of the great outdoors!

Your guide will prepare your meals over an open fire (if you have any dietary requirements please let us know at the time of booking). Despite the wilderness locations, the meals that the guides produce always get wonderful feedback from our clients every year.

The wilderness cabins do not have shower or bathroom facilities but with it being Finland there is always a sauna on hand to steam clean in. Toilets are generally compostable and are situated a short walk from the cabin. We would suggest a head torch as a handy piece of equipment to take for any nocturnal visits!

Sleeping arrangements are in dormitory style areas where you will sleep in arctic grade sleeping bags and, should you feel the cold, possibly your thermals. The cabins tend to get toasty warm once the fire has been blazing for a while.

Whilst on overnight safaris, your luggage will be securely stored at the hotel and valuables can be left in the hotel safe.

Safari Houses and Cabins
On our multi-day husky and snowmobile safaris you will spend some nights in shared safari houses or cabins at the beginning and end of your trip. Harriniva has a variety that they use, some of which are on site and others which are situated 3km from Harriniva. Guests will be transferred to the hotel for all meals if they are staying off site.

Each safari house or cabin has its own shower, toilet and sauna.

Day 1: Flights, arrival and introduction
After arrival at the airport you will be transferred to Harriniva Wilderness Hotel where you can settle into your shared accommodation in the safari house nearby. You will then be transferred to the hotel to enjoy a welcome dinner in the hotel.

Day 2 to 5: Five day husky safari
Following breakfast you will meet with your guide for a full briefing and instruction session before getting acquainted with your dog team. Then the sleds and equipment will be packed ready for the awaiting wilderness.

Your route will take you out into one of Europe’s most pristine environments, with huskies pulling your sled though beautiful snow-laden forests and across endless frozen lakes. Depending on the terrain and weather conditions you will cover 25 to 40km per day and with the only sounds being the soft rustle of the sleigh and the patter of paws on snow you will soon settle into a relaxed rhythm, enjoying the remarkable beauty of your surroundings.

For your accommodation you will stay in simple yet cosy wilderness cabins. Although they are not equipped with showers, indoor toilets or electricity they do have a sauna in which you can wash and warm up. Dinner will be served over an open fire adding to the true sense of remote wilderness.

This far north, in such an isolated and unspoiled environment with no light pollution there is a fantastic chance of seeing the Northern Lights in all their glory.

While on the trail, everybody takes care of their own dogs so be prepared to muck in. Breakfasts and dinners are prepared together allowing you to develop your survival and team spirit. Depending on conditions, lunches will also be around fires whilst out on the trail.

Day 6: The final leg
Today you will head back on the final leg of your journey toward the relative civilisation of the hotel. You are sure to be sad to say farewell to your huskies, but many guests find that the hot showers and hotel facilities are a welcome sight and help to make it all better!

Day 7: Departure
Today your wonderful adventure will draw to a close as you are transferred to the airport for your flight home.
